Death Omens

In the area where I live, it is very uncommon to hear a whipporwhill. When my dad was young, he heard one calling at night. The next day his grandmother suffered a fatal heart attack. Years later when he was 14 he heard one and his Dad passed away. Once more, when he was 16 he heard one on his way to a school dance and when he got their he found out one of his friends had been killed by a drunk driver. My grandmother says she heard one when her mother died, and another when her brother passed. Both of them say they never heard one other than those incidents, and both say they never want to here them again.

I also hear countless incidents where birds flying into a house or hitting a wondow on a house means a death in the family.

A few months ago, a big black stray dog used to sit in our yard around midnight and just howl, directly below my grandmother's window. Later, I found out she had gotten her will straightened out, cleaned her closets, and decided what she would be burried in. She was certain it meant her death. She's still with us now.

So do you have any experiences like my familie's with the whipporwhill? Do you have any superstitions regarding death?

Devil's Hopyard

This is more of a local(ish) legend. There's a lot of folklore and urban legends around this place from there being cauldron-like pools in the river formed by the Devil's footprints, to shadows and whispers and voices heard randomly in the woods.

I've attatched two images that I had on my computer from a while back (I think I just googled Devil's Hopyard since they were for a project)

All in all it's an interesting place where there's rumors of demons and the Devil himself. A pretty neat little place that I have actually been to before a few times when I was a kid. I don't remember seeing or hearing anything when I was out there but then again I was a kid so I wasn't paying much attention to stuff like that.

Western Australia: the pines and similar

G'day folks, hope all are well.

In the last thread I posted, regarding large felids in west Australia, a location that almost all people in the Perth metro area know came up; the Gnangara pine plantation.

There's been alleged sightings of all manner of things there, mystery creatures, weird and sinister rituals and other crazy crap, I actually remember reading a story years ago of a man who claimed to be chased by a UFO whilst four wheel driving there at night.

My experiences out there unfortunately have been fairly uneventful, despite having been there literally hundreds of times. Although it does get very frightening if you're stuck out there alone at night (don't ask, I was young and dumb and testing my new 4x4 and let me tell you, just the vibe of the place sent a godawful chill up my spine).

If anyone's got any stories or accounts of weird stuff in the gnangara pine plantation or similar areas, please share!

Cheers

Friday the 13th - also known as Black Friday - has long been regarded as an unlucky day. Why do we choose this day in particular to fear for our lives?

The superstition around this day is thought to have come about during the Middle Ages, and may have Biblical origins.

Some historians have claimed it was the day on which Eve bit the apple from the Tree of Knowledge, the great flood began and the builders of the Tower of Babel.

Almost 2 percent of the Earth's surface is covered by freshwater. Much of that is contained in lakes with legendary monsters that are low-rent rip-offs of the Loch Ness monster. But the best of the local lake monsters terrorize their communities in unique ways and spark their own local legends.

Floating down the stairs

I've always had a strange memory. When I was around maybe four, I used to enjoy seeing if I could get down the stairs in as few steps as possible. Well one day I decided to go for it big time. I leapt from the very top step, and landed at the bottom of the stairs perfectly well and unharmed, as if I'd just jumped down one step. I vividly remember just sort of gliding down the stairs.

I was reading in article the other day in Paranormal magazine and the writer of the article had a similar experience where he fell down the stairs, bounced down each step and landed at the bottom unharmed. He says he did some research and its quite common and a lot of people have memories like his or like mine. Even the editor of that magazine recalls it.

I then googled this and found a few random forum topics by people who have a memory like this.

Does anyone else recall floating down the stairs as a child?

Yes I recently just saw the movie. It was quite scary. But what is the Ba Ba dook? Is it like a version of the Boogey Man?

And is he real?

Where did this story start? And can I get one of those cool Ba Ba Dook story books ?

Midnight Man

It is believed that the Midnight Game was once an old pagan ritual used as a punishment for those who dared to disobey the gods. While this claim is unsubstantiated, the game has still become a popular activity for thrill seekers. As with all of Most Dangerous Games, proceed at your own risk – if you must proceed at all. It is recommended that you do not, under any circumstances, play this game.

Rules and details here.

Has anyone ever tried this game? It seems pretty intimidating...

Urban Legend or Satanic Site ? Satan's Hollow

BLUE ASH, Ohio - You won’t find it on a map and can’t see it from the road, but beyond the woods and overgrowth in a quiet Blue Ash community some say, exists a portal to hell, nicknamed Satan’s Hollow.

According to Urban Legend the old storm sewer was once used by Satanists as a location for rituals, including sacrificing animals and some claim humans.

Although police have repeatedly and emphatically denied any known murders or sacrificial activities at the location.

Irrational Childhood Fears, who's had 'em?

$

Hello, long time lurker, first time poster.

There might be a thread on this, so if there is direct me there please.

Anyway, what were people's irrational childhood fears? For example, toilet monster, monster under the bed, bogeyman in the closet, etc.

One night, when I was about 8 years old and watching tv with my mum, after watching a tv ad for sunscreen where people who didn't wear sunscreen turned into lobsters, I had this fear my mum would turn into a lobster--then I would have to act like she was still my mum, because if she knew I knew she was a lobster, then she would eat me. I couldn't look at my mum for the rest of the night, for fear she would be a lobster. Luckily, the next day in the sunlight, this fear went away.

As a child I was never scared of monsters in the closet, witches, etc, but was permentently terrified robbers would break in, and I would flip out if anyone left windows open at night--even though we lived in a third floor apartment!!! It's not like anyone could really get in.

Also, I never ever hung my hands or feet over the edges of the bed...and on particulary frightening nights, the only thing that would keep me safe would be to hide completely under the blankets, even if it was a hot night.

I wonder why children believe these things, the psychology of it. I mean, parents can sit a child down, and logically explain it (whatever the fear is) away, but the child will still persist in believing in their particular fear.

I was never scared of the dark, though. I liked it, figured I was safer in the dark, thinking the robbers/monster wouldn't be able to see me. I still like the dark.

So, to everyone here, what were your fears? How did you get over them? Do any still persist into adulthood? And were there any shared fears (i.e. shared with siblings, or school mates)?

The Candy Lady

I was speaking to my grandmother and she told me the story of the Candy Lady, have any of you heard that story?  It kinda creeps me out. I guess there was this lady  named Clara Crane whose daughter was killed and she blamed her husband, so she killed him with poisoned caramels. She was sent to a mental hospital then was released because of overcrowding. A little later children started disappearing in her hometown. A rumor started going around that she was stealing them. They said that there was a Candy Lady who would leave bags of chocolates (caramels?) on their windowsills then lure her to her house with the promise of more. My grandmother said it was a story that parents would tell their children to enforce that you never take candy from strangers. Or go to a strangers house for that matter, haha. Have any of you heard this story before? I don't know if it is just a Texas thang. :)

The Digital Folklore Project

While out and wandering around on the web, I stumbled across this rather interesting paper about digital folklore, and thought it would be good to share it here on UM :)

Quote

Abstract

I collected forty-two e-mail forwards over the course of four months, and from those I formulated a framework that adapts existing theory in collection and study of real-world folklore to the emerging folk communities that exist on the internet. Through this analysis I prove that the same genres of folklore that is routinely collected by folklorists have been adapted to fit the digital environment of the internet. I then use the framework that I lay out to perform a study of the e-mails themselves.

Mythical Monster Map

Hello

I wanted to put a project out there, that I've just finished:

http://mythical-monsters.com/

The Mythical Monster Map allows you to learn about the world’s astonishing looking Monsters which are linked to country customs and stories in legends.

The Monsters exhibit a variety of characteristics: from the strong but unintelligent Troll of Scandinavia to the benevolent and extremely powerful Azure Dragon of China to the beautiful, magical forest-dwelling woman Madremonte of Colombia. Behaviour varies from Monster to Monster: some are threatening, some are helpful to humans and some have magical powers. The body shape and colours and dynamic poses help to highlight the individual characteristics of each Monster.

All feedback, is very welcome!

thanks

Peter

7th Son of a 7th Son

Some lady told George Noory last night on Coast to Coast that she knew a person who was a 7th Son of a 7th Son, and she was trying to find out more about him.

George ended his first hour by saying a 7th Son was a gifted person with ESP like powers..

I don't know if you listen to Iron Maiden or not but they have a whole album based upon the 7th Son.. I heard it was a sci-fi series of books..

Also, my friend borrowed some type of vampire book from somebody and told me there was something in it about the 7th Son..

Anyone have any info?

Death always comes in threes?

$

I have heard the theory that deaths always come in three. So for instance if someone dies there will be two more people connected to them in some form that will also die. The connections could be as close as familial connections or as distant as being associates within the same industry such as Hollywood. Friends, people in the same neighborhood even though strangers, or anything else that has a common factor.

Has anyone noticed this? Does anyone have examples? Do you believe this is true?

The man who died from his own passed wind.

Hi,

A few years ago I remember reading (or possibly hearing) a story about an obese American man who was staying in a small bedroom. He had eaten a lot of greens and grain or whatever. Anyway there was also something else about it being cold so he had all the windows shut.

During the night he passed a huge amount of wind and died from gas poisoning.

So for this 'Urban Legend' to be true, he would have needed to have expelled a huge amount of wind. Also the room must have been small and the door closed.

What's human wind made off?

How much wind could an obese person make in say 12 hours?

How much air does a person use up in 12 hours?
